I would like to express my experience at Providence Park Hospital in October 2017. Have you seen the tv show The Resident? Well, that was exactly my experience. Background: At the time I was about 3 months pregnant and was having horrible morning sickness (all day sickness). After a few days of not being able to eat and being extremely dehydrated, I was instructed by my doctor to head to the ER room to get an IV since it was late at night and nothing else was open. I arrived at the ER and there was about 1 person in front of me. I signed in with the receptionist and met with a triage nurse pretty quickly. Then I waited in the waiting room for a little over an hour puking my guts out into a bucket since they informed me that I wasn’t an emergency and they had to access their rooms. After over an hour I was finally taken back to a room. I informed them that I only was dehydrated and was at my doctor two days prior and had my blood work done. I informed them that all I wanted was an IV per my doctor and that was it. They next told me they were going to put an IV in me and I looked away because when I get poked with a needle I usually pass out. When I turned back and the IV was in me I noticed they had also taken my blood. I told them to dump it out and that I didn’t want to be charged for blood work since I had just been to the doctors two days prior and had blood work completed. They informed me that they wouldn’t test my blood (which was repeated to me several times throughout the night by doctors & nurses). I continued to ask what was being done because I didn’t want to be charged with anything I didn’t want/need. I even offered to sign a liability form stating all I wanted was an IV. They informed me they would do by best and whenever a new doctor/nurse visited my room it was brought up that I was trying to be budget conscious and to do the minimum. I was given my IV with some nausea medicine. After a few hours I was sent home. A month later I was sent a bill. Which just started a fiveish month nightmare!!!!! I have called and talked about this situation many times since October 2017. I informed them that I didn’t agree with the bill and wanted to refute it. Here are the items I was displeased with. 1) Charged for blood work when they took my blood without my knowledge and then continued to promise me they wouldn’t test it BUT THEY DID! 2) Charged me for a LEVEL 5 service at the hospital (facility fee) 3) Charged me for a LEVEL 4 physician fee 4) Charged me for IV solution and nausea medication My issues with bill that I relayed to hospital: 1) I shouldn’t be charged for blood work since I informed them that I just had blood work two days prior and that they took my blood without my consent. Also, they tested it after they repeatedly told me they WOULD NOT! They informed me that services were performed so I HAD TO PAY!! 2) Charged me for a LEVEL 5 (BECAUSE I AM PREGANT THEY TOLD ME IT WAS a level 5). They informed me that the nurse who checked me in picks the level. That doesn’t seem right that the nurse who IS NOT TAKING CARE OF ME would pick the level of service I received???? Another thing that doesn’t make sense, the second bill I received from the physician WHO DID TAKE CARE OF ME only coded it as a LEVEL 4? So I told the hospital that the facility fee should change to a level 4 to match the physician code. They informed me that it didn’t matter and that the nurse who checks you in picks the code?? If that makes ANY sense? Long story short, everything was fine and all I needed was an IV with nausea medication which is what I told them ALL I needed in the beginning. When I looked at the charges the fees for that was under $50. However, I walked out with almost a $1,400 bill! I feel that they need to drop my facilities charge to a level 4 to match the physician’s code who actually took care of me and remove the lab fees for the blood work they said they wouldn’t do. They basically told me that after an audit the services were rendered (doesn’t matter if I told them no and they said they wouldn’t do it) I have to pay. I feel so extorted with my hands tied behind my back. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS HOSPITAL and you shouldn’t too. They will charge you for whatever they want and make you pay whether you wanted/needed it or not. If you go here, be prepared to walk out with a LARGE bill that you have to pay no matter what.
